My name is C, and I am a white, lesbian counselor living in Canyon Lake, TX. I received my Masters in Counseling from Lamar University in Beaumont. Prior to that, I worked as a computer tech with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Colorado Springs. My favorite part of tech was helping my coworkers to stop being so hard on themselves when something happened that they couldn’t control and did not have the information to fix. It took a couple of decades, but I finally realized that my interests were far more geared towards the counseling field.
My very first volunteer position was at the Austin Rape Crisis Center, now SAFE. I worked several shifts a week, taking hotline calls and meeting survivors at the hospital for a forensic exam. I had to leave volunteering due to family circumstances, but the work always lingered at the back of my mind. When a position opened at the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center (where we work with a spectrum of genders and ages, not just women), I eagerly applied. This is where I completed my internship, working with people who had experienced family violence and/or sexual abuse and assault. Many of my clients were also dealing with religious trauma and trying to overcome the harmful effects of purity culture. In addition, I had the honor of working with LGBTQIA+ clients as they navigated trauma with the additional burden of being queer in Texas.
When we work together, we bring both of our expertise to the room. You are the expert on you – your history, your strengths, your goals, what helps you, and what fails to help. My education and training gives me insight into patterns in your life, how trauma—both big and small—might affect you today, and how we can help your brain be kinder to you. The theory that most informs my work is feminist theory, exploring how cultural and political factors shape our world, and how we can navigate those stressors while maintaining our integrity and valuing our own worth. I incorporate mindfulness, narrative therapy, self-compassion, EMDR, and a bit of cognitive behavioral therapy, based on what works best for you.
I am constantly in awe of all of my clients, watching them navigate this difficult world with grace and determination. I so look forward to meeting you and being amazed by you as well.
